The crypto world is keenly awaiting Bitcoin’s third block halving, which will likely be the most significant ever.

The halving (or ‘halvening’, as it is known in the community) will take place at block 630,000, just before 8pm UTC on Monday 11 May.

Miners’ rewards will drop from 12.5 BTC to 6.25 BTC.

There will be many more halvenings, but this will likely prove the most significant.

This halvening will see Bitcoin become the hardest money ever created. Its inflation rate will drop below 2% — less than central banks’ target for fiat. Moreover, this occurs at a time when major central banks are printing money like never before due to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bitcoin’s supply will increase at about the same rate as that of gold. And that will only fall further in the future.

At its first halving, in November 2012, Bitcoin was still an experiment.

At its second, in July 2016, it was only just coming to mainstream attention.

Today, Bitcoin is a global phenomenon. Institutional interest and infrastructure is soaring.

And the halving takes place at a time when the world needs a secure, borderless, censorship-resistant, digital store of value.

These are interesting TIMEs.
